What the 1970s taught us

The 1970s tend to wind up in the fashion bad books.  In fact there are many who blame this decade for the demise of mainstream fashion.  I know, I was one of them!  But when you put aside disco and Saturday Night Fever, when you ignore ABBA with their sparkle lycra body suits and focus on the real style icons of the 1970s you come to realise that we have a lot to be thankful for.

Sorry I seem to have lost the source address for this photo, if it is yours please let me know.

If there is one thing that the 1970s have taught us, it is to loosen up!  The 1970s brought us kaftans, Grecian style dresses, free flowing hair, t-shirts and sneakers for everyday wear.  They taught us that style and comfort can be one of the same.

Sadly however, we have somehow managed to exploit the fashion comfort that the 1970s bestowed upon us and have taken it too far.  So just for the record I would like to say that while I love to wear jeans, adore my converse sneakers and am a real fan of the occasional t-shirt, I DO NOT think it is okay to wear your pyjamas to the supermarket.  In my opinion it is also not okay to wear track pants anywhere other than the gym or at home, and for goodness sake leave your ugg boots where the world can't see them.  There is a huge difference between comfort and down right slobbishness (is that a word?), and perhaps this is what the 1970s fashion is a disappointment to die hard vintage lovers.

Okay I think I've had my rant!  In other news I just realise last night that there is only a week and a half left until I leave for Europe... suddenly there is SO much to do!  Eeeeeeeeek so excited though.

  1. I agree. I do wear tracksuit only at home (when I don't have visitors) and when I take my doggies for a walk. I really do not understand how people can go out ther house in their pyjamas!
From 70's I just love the hair!

  2. I love 70's fashion! And i'm right there with you on the uggs and trackies. And that's coming from someone who has to spend A LOT of time wearing yoga clothes. But i still manage to put on real clothing most of the time!
