Mad about hatters

If I could proudly claim to have just one material obsession it would be hats. I love the way they feel, their history, the elegance they convey and the statements that can be made with them. In fact had I known that millinery was a profession when I finished school I would probably have sought out a course or apprenticeship in that and not wasted 5 years of my life studying some useless academic degree's! So anyway when I recently resign from the job I had been in for 2 and a half years they kindly gave me a voucher for my favourite book store as a leaving present, I naturally spent it on a book about millinery! I saw Hats, an anthology by Stephen Jones in the front window and immediately snapped it up (this little book store often only stocks one of every book).

Now to be honest I wouldn't say that I was a die hard Stephen Jones fan. Yes he has done some stunning work and is very talented but I guess it just comes down to a question of personal taste. However he has been in the business for a long time so if I wanted to read a hat anthology he would be the man I'd want to hear it from. The book has some beautiful pictures and a very sweet forward from John Galliano (whose work I absolutely love).






I have pulled back a bit on my own hat collecting lately because it was just getting too much. In fact I should probably still have a clear out and sell some soon before they take over my room completely and I am left sleeping outside (because trust me when I say that this isn't even the half of it)!














All my hats are ones which I have found on Trade Me, in second hand stores, or have made. However there are some current Milliners whose work I admire a great deal including Kim Brown-Dye's who owns Topsy Turvy design, as well as Fiona Timantti (who was recently featured on The Freelancer's Fashionblog). It is definitely a dying art but I am so glad to see that there are still some talented people carrying the torch and keeping the art of millinery alive.
